Private vs shared desert tour from Marrakech: which should you book?
Par Rachid — Propriétaire et rédacteur des itinéraires, Rachid Excursions

The route to the Sahara is long, so the difference between private and shared is not a small detail — it changes the whole trip. The itinerary may look similar on paper, but pickup, stopping power, hotel quality, camp level and how rushed you feel are very different.
Private vs shared at a glance
| Shared tour | Private tour | |
|---|---|---|
| 3-day Merzouga price | €70 / €95 / €120 pp | Written group quote |
| Pickup | Marrakech hotel or riad pickup | Your riad/hotel door |
| Vehicle | Minibus / shared van | Private car or 4x4 |
| Stops | Fixed group stops | Flexible photo, coffee and village stops |
| Pace | Efficient but rushed | Slower, tailored to you |
| Room and tent | Set by tier: shared (€70), private (€95) or private A/C tent with en-suite bathroom (€120) | Chosen by comfort level and quoted in writing |
| Best for | Solo travellers, tight budgets | Couples, families, photographers |
When a shared tour makes sense
A shared tour is the right choice when price matters most and you are comfortable moving with a group. It is especially good for solo travellers because the fixed transport cost is split across the van. You still see the big route — Ait Ben Haddou, Dadès, Todra, camel ride, camp — but you do not control the stops or timing.
When private is worth the extra cost
Private becomes worth it when the journey is part of the holiday, not just transport to the dunes. You can stop where the light is good, skip tourist shops, start from your riad, choose a better camp, slow down with children, or add a special stop like Skoura palms or a longer Todra Gorge walk. For couples, the extra cost often buys back the comfort people wish they had paid for later.
Hidden costs to check before booking
Whichever format you choose, the extras are the same kind. The full price list for every desert tour, with tips and lunches, is in our desert tour cost guide; these are the ones that most often change the comparison:
- Lunches are not included on our shared desert tours — budget about 100–150 MAD (€10–15) per lunch stop
- Some very cheap tours use distant meeting points instead of riad pickup
- Camp upgrades can cost extra if the base price is for standard tents
- Drinks, tips, quad biking and sandboarding may be optional extras
- Private prices should state vehicle type, driver/guide language, accommodation level and pickup address
Our recommendation
If you are solo, backpacking or want the lowest possible Sahara price, book shared. If you are two or more people and this is a once-in-a-lifetime desert trip, book private — not because it is fancier, but because the 560 km each way becomes a real journey instead of a timetable.
"The road to the Sahara is part of the trip, not just the way there. People who go private almost never regret it — it's the ones who picked a shared seat on price alone who tell me afterward they wish they hadn't."— Rachid, Marrakech itinerary editor, Rachid Excursions
