3-day vs 4-day Sahara loop — which is worth the extra day?

The 3-day Merzouga loop is the classic Morocco Sahara trip. The 4-day version adds one night. Here's what that extra day actually buys you.

    The 3-day loop, honestly

Day 1: Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Dadès (sleep). Day 2: Dadès → Todra gorge → Merzouga (camel trek + camp overnight). Day 3: Sunrise on dunes → drive back to Marrakech (long, ~10 hours). You cover everything, but Day 3 is a driving day — you get home tired.

    What the extra day adds

Day 1 & 2 stay the same. Day 3 becomes a rest day at the camp: hike a dune, ride a quad, visit a nomadic family, second night under stars. Day 4 splits the return drive across two comfortable halves with a proper stop in Ouarzazate or the Skoura palmery.

    Who should pick which

    • 3 days: first-time visitors, tight schedules, budget-conscious, anyone happy with "seeing" the desert
    • 4 days: photographers, families with kids under 10, anyone whose main goal is the desert (not just the route)
    • 5+ days: skip the standard loop entirely — look at the 4-day Chegaga private trek or a private itinerary instead

    Our honest take

If you have the time, 4 days is a materially better trip — the second desert night is where the Sahara actually settles into you. If you don't, 3 days still works; just don't book a big activity on the day you return to Marrakech.

"The first night in the desert, people are still buzzing from the camel ride. It's the second night — the one only the 4-day loop gives you — where they stop talking and just look up."— Rachid, Marrakech itinerary editor, Rachid Excursions

    Frequently asked

On a 3-day loop, we don't recommend anything before 22:00. On a 4-day loop, an evening flight (18:00+) is fine.

For most travellers, yes. The first night you're processing camel-ride adrenaline; the second night is when you notice the silence, the Milky Way and the temperature drop.

There is no published 4-day price. The shared 3-day tiers are €70, €95 and €120 per person; ask for a written quote for a 4-day version and compare exactly what the extra day includes.

Day 1 and Day 3 involve ~9–10 hours of driving each. It is manageable and very popular, but 4 days is significantly more relaxing.
