Agafay or the Palmeraie: which quad and camel trip from Marrakech?
By Rachid — Owner and itinerary editor, Rachid Excursions

Both trips put you on a quad and then on a camel, both collect you from your hotel or riad, and they are €5 apart. That is where the similarity ends. Agafay is an afternoon-into-night outing in open stone desert that ends with dinner. The Palmeraie is a shorter, riding-heavy half day in the palm grove on the edge of the city. Pick by what you want from the day, not by the price.

Setting: open stone desert or palm grove
Agafay is a stone desert: rolling, bare, rocky hills south-west of Marrakech with the High Atlas along the horizon. It looks like a desert, but there is no sand to speak of, so do not expect dunes. The Palmeraie is a large grove of date palms on the northern edge of the city. You ride on dusty tracks between the palms, with the mountains in the background on a clear day. If the photo you have in mind is wide empty ground at sunset, that is Agafay. If you just want to ride and are happy among palm trees, the Palmeraie gives you more of it.
Timing: an evening or a half day
The Agafay trip runs a fixed 14:00 to 22:00. You ride the quad in the late afternoon, get on the camel as the sun goes down, then eat at the camp and watch the fire show before the drive back. It fills your afternoon and your evening, so plan a quiet morning. The Palmeraie trip is about 4 hours door to door, and you choose the slot: 09:00 back around 13:00, 14:00 back around 18:00, or 16:00 back around 20:00. The 16:00 slot is the one for golden-hour photos. In the hottest months, the morning slot keeps you out of the worst of the afternoon heat.
What each price includes
- Agafay, €35: hotel or riad pickup and drop-off, round-trip air-conditioned transport, 1 hour of quad with a guide, helmet and safety briefing, a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, buffet dinner at the Berber camp (grilled meats, chicken, Moroccan salads, couscous, dessert), and the fire show with live music
- Palmeraie, €30: hotel or riad pickup and drop-off, 2 hours of quad or buggy with a guide, helmet and safety briefing, a 1-hour camel ride, the traditional Tuareg gandoura to wear on the camel, and a break with mint tea and pastries
Riding time
This is the real difference. The Palmeraie gives you 2 hours on a quad or buggy and a full hour on the camel: three hours of riding in a four-hour trip. Agafay gives you 1 hour of quad and 30 minutes on the camel, then the rest of the evening is sunset, dinner and the show. If you came for the quad, the Palmeraie doubles it for €5 less. If one hour on a quad is plenty and you would rather not organise dinner, Agafay is the better use of the day.
Choose Agafay if…
- You want the sunset, a camel ride and dinner in one booking, with no restaurant to find afterwards
- You want open desert scenery with the Atlas behind it, and you know it is stone, not dunes
- You have a short stay and want one outing that covers the afternoon and the evening
- One hour on a quad is enough for you, or someone in your group would rather skip the camel: that part is optional, and you can go straight to the camp for tea and the sunset
- You travel with children or older relatives: kids can ride as passengers on the quad and on their own camel with a handler walking alongside, and vegetarian dinner options are available if you ask when booking
Choose the Palmeraie if…
- You want as much riding time as possible: 2 hours of quad or buggy and 1 hour of camel
- You only have half a day, or you already have dinner, a hammam or other plans in the city that evening
- You prefer a morning start, or want the 16:00 slot for golden-hour light
- You would rather drive a buggy than a quad; a buggy for two people is quoted on request
- You travel with children: kids can ride as passengers behind an adult on the quad or in a buggy, and children from around 5 can do the camel ride with a handler on foot
Quads: licence, safety and who rides what
Neither trip needs a driving licence. Both start with a safety briefing and a helmet, you set the pace, and if you have never ridden a quad the guide stays close for the first few minutes. Neither tour page says whether each adult gets a quad to themselves, so do not assume either way. When you book, ask for it to be confirmed in writing, together with your pickup time and the price for your group. It matters most if you want to ride on your own or if one of you would rather be a passenger.
What to wear and bring
- Closed shoes: sandals are a bad idea on a quad and on the camel
- Long sleeves and long trousers you do not mind getting dusty; they are more comfortable on the quad
- Sunglasses, and a scarf or buff for the dust
- Sun protection for the afternoon slots, and water; drinks at the Agafay camp are not included
- For Agafay, a warm layer for after dark, because you are out until about 22:00
- For the Palmeraie, the gandoura and turban for the camel ride are provided
- Some dirhams in small notes for drinks and tips
What is extra, and how you pay
On Agafay, the tour page lists drinks at the camp (soft drinks, water, alcohol), tips for the guide, camel handlers and camp staff, extra quad time or a private buggy upgrade on request, and travel insurance as not included. The Palmeraie page lists no paid extras; the buggy for two is priced on request, and tips are at your discretion. Payment timing and any deposit are confirmed in writing before booking, so you know the total and when it is due before you commit.
If you want both, book them on different days: the Palmeraie morning slot gets back around 13:00 and the Agafay pickup is at 14:00, which leaves no margin.

Agafay Desert — Sunset & Dinner
Afternoon & evening · Quad + camel · Buffet dinner · Fire show under the stars
An Agafay desert afternoon and evening from Marrakech for €35 / MAD 350 per person, 14:00 to 22:00 with hotel or riad pickup. It includes 1 hour of quad biking, a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, a buffet dinner at a Berber camp and a fire show; drinks and tips are extra. Agafay is a stone desert 45 minutes from the city, not the Sahara sand dunes — for dunes, take the 3-day Merzouga tour. Get picked up at 14:00, ride quad for an hour across the lunar stone desert with the High Atlas on the horizon, swap the engine for a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, then settle into a Berber camp for a buffet dinner (grilled meats, chicken, salads, couscous) and a traditional fire show under the stars. Back at your riad by 22:00.
Palmeraie — Quad & Camel
Half day · 2h quad or buggy · 1h camel · Berber tea break
A half-day of quad biking and a camel ride in the Marrakech Palmeraie for €30 / MAD 300 per person, about 4 hours with pickup at 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00. It includes hotel or riad pickup, 2 hours of quad or buggy with a guide and helmet, a 1-hour camel ride and a Berber tea break; no driving licence is needed. The Palmeraie is the vast oasis of hundreds of thousands of date palms right on the northern edge of the city. Kick up dust on a quad or buggy for two full hours through the palm groves and Berber tracks, pause for photos, then trade the engine for a one-hour camel ride wrapped in a traditional Tuareg gandoura, and finish with sweet mint tea under the palms. Pickup at 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00 — morning, afternoon or golden hour — confirmed for your date, so you can slot it around your other Marrakech plans.
