The best things to do in Marrakech in 3 days

Jemaa el-Fnaa square in the Marrakech medina at dusk

Three days is the sweet spot for Marrakech: enough to feel the medina, escape to the mountains or desert for a day, and still have time to slow down. Here's how we'd spend it — with room to adapt.

Day 1 — The medina and souks

Start early at the Koutoubia mosque and gardens, wander into the souks before the crowds, visit the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs, then let yourself get lost among the spice and leather stalls. As the sun drops, head to Jemaa el-Fnaa square — orange-juice carts, storytellers, food stalls and the call to prayer over the rooftops. Dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking the square.

Day 2 — Escape the city

Pick one, depending on your mood: the Ourika valley and Atlas foothills for Berber villages and waterfalls; the Agafay stone desert for a lunar landscape, camel ride and sunset dinner just 45 minutes away; or the Ouzoud waterfalls (a longer full day) for Morocco's most dramatic cascades and wild macaques. All three are easy day trips with hotel pickup.

Day 3 — Gardens, art and rest

A slower day: the Jardin Majorelle and the Yves Saint Laurent museum in the morning (book Majorelle tickets ahead — queues are long), lunch in Gueliz, and an afternoon hammam and mint tea to recover. If you still have energy, the Le Jardin Secret or the Menara gardens make a peaceful finish.

    If you have more time

With 5+ days, add the 3-day Merzouga Sahara loop — the medina makes far more sense as the bookends of a trip that also reaches the dunes. Don't try to squeeze the deep desert into a 3-day city break; the driving eats the days.

    Frequently asked

Yes — three days covers the medina, one day-trip escape and the gardens comfortably. It's not enough to add the deep Sahara (Merzouga), which needs a 3-day loop of its own.

Not the real Erg Chebbi dunes — Merzouga alone is a 3-day round trip. You could do the closer Agafay stone desert (45 min) as a day trip, or Zagora if you dedicate 2 of your 3 days to it.

For scenery-per-hour, the Ourika valley and Atlas; for something otherworldly close to the city, Agafay; for a big natural spectacle, Ouzoud waterfalls.

Not essential, but a half-day local guide makes the souks far less overwhelming and helps you avoid the pushier stalls. Many riads can arrange one.

    Ourika Valley — Day Trip

    Current published basis
    €18 / MAD 180 per person

A relaxed full-day escape from Marrakech into the lush Ourika Valley — just 1h15 from the medina. Follow the river deep into the High Atlas, stop in traditional Berber villages, then hike with a local guide to the Ourika waterfalls at Setti Fatma before a slow lunch at a riverside restaurant with your feet almost in the water. Back in Marrakech in time for a hammam and sunset drinks.

Agafay Desert — Sunset & Dinner

Afternoon & evening · Quad + camel · Buffet dinner · Fire show under the stars

    Current published basis
    €35 / MAD 350 per person

An Agafay desert afternoon and evening from Marrakech for €35 / MAD 350 per person, 14:00 to 22:00 with hotel or riad pickup. It includes 1 hour of quad biking, a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, a buffet dinner at a Berber camp and a fire show; drinks and tips are extra. Agafay is a stone desert 45 minutes from the city, not the Sahara sand dunes — for dunes, take the 3-day Merzouga tour. Get picked up at 14:00, ride quad for an hour across the lunar stone desert with the High Atlas on the horizon, swap the engine for a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, then settle into a Berber camp for a buffet dinner (grilled meats, chicken, salads, couscous) and a traditional fire show under the stars. Back at your riad by 22:00.

Ouzoud Waterfalls — Shared Day Trip

Shared full day · 110m falls · Boat ride paid on site · Barbary macaques

    Current published basis
    €23 / MAD 230 per person

A full day of green landscapes, spray and monkeys — the perfect contrast to the medina. Leave Marrakech at 08:45 and drive ~150 km north-east through the Middle Atlas and small Berber villages to the Ouzoud waterfalls, Morocco's tallest at 110 m. Walk the shaded path down to the base, take a small wooden boat under the mist of the falls, meet the wild Barbary macaques, and stop for a slow tagine lunch on a terrace overlooking the cascades before heading back to Marrakech for around 19:30.
