Essaouira day trip from Marrakech: is it worth it?
By Rachid — Owner and itinerary editor, Rachid Excursions

When Marrakech gets hot and busy, locals head for the Atlantic. Essaouira — the blue-and-white "Windy City" — is the easiest coastal escape, and it makes a genuinely satisfying day trip. Here's what the drive is like, what to do, and whether one day is enough.
The drive: how long and what you'll see
Essaouira sits about 190 km west of Marrakech, about 2h45–3 hours each way on a good road across the Chichaoua plains. The classic stop en route is an argan-oil cooperative — women's collectives pressing oil by hand — and if you're lucky, the famous goats that climb the argan trees. It's an easy, flat drive; no mountain switchbacks like the desert route.
What to do in a day
- Wander the UNESCO-listed medina and Skala ramparts over the sea
- Watch the blue fishing boats unload at the harbour
- Eat grilled-that-morning seafood at the port
- Browse thuya-wood workshops and argan cosmetics
- Walk or ride a camel/horse along the wide Atlantic beach
- Spot Game of Thrones (Astapor) filming locations along the walls
Is one day enough?
For the medina, ramparts, harbour and a seafood lunch — yes, a day trip covers the highlights comfortably, with roughly 5 hours in town. If you surf, kitesurf, or want to feel the slow rhythm of the place (sunset on the ramparts is special), stay a night. But nobody regrets doing it as a day trip when time is tight.
Best time and what to pack
Essaouira is a summer saviour — while Marrakech bakes at 40°C, the coast stays a breezy 22–25°C. That same wind (it's nicknamed the Windy City) means it can feel cool and blustery even in spring and autumn, so bring a light jacket and something to keep your hair and camera out of the sand. April–November is the sweet spot.

Ouzoud Waterfalls — Shared Day Trip
Shared full day · 110m falls · Boat ride paid on site · Barbary macaques
A full day of green landscapes, spray and monkeys — the perfect contrast to the medina. Leave Marrakech at 08:45 and drive ~150 km north-east through the Middle Atlas and small Berber villages to the Ouzoud waterfalls, Morocco's tallest at 110 m. Walk the shaded path down to the base, take a small wooden boat under the mist of the falls, meet the wild Barbary macaques, and stop for a slow tagine lunch on a terrace overlooking the cascades before heading back to Marrakech for around 19:30.
Ourika Valley — Day Trip
Full day · Berber villages · Ourika waterfalls · Riverside lunch
A relaxed full-day escape from Marrakech into the lush Ourika Valley — just 1h15 from the medina. Follow the river deep into the High Atlas, stop in traditional Berber villages, then hike with a local guide to the Ourika waterfalls at Setti Fatma before a slow lunch at a riverside restaurant with your feet almost in the water. Back in Marrakech in time for a hammam and sunset drinks.
