Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass in the High Atlas

Aït Ben Haddou is the mud-brick fortress you've seen in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Prince of Persia. It's a real UNESCO World Heritage ksar, still lived in, and the drive from Marrakech is a big part of the experience. Here's exactly how it goes.

    The route in three legs

Leg 1 — Marrakech to Taddert (~90 km, 90 min): flat plain, then the road starts climbing into cedar and juniper forest. Taddert is a good coffee stop; grab honey and argan oil from the roadside cooperatives here, not later at the pass where prices double.

Leg 2 — Taddert to Tizi n'Tichka pass (~35 km, 60 min): 25 hairpin bends, gaining 900 m of altitude. The pass sits at 2,260 m and has a small parking area with panoramic views back over the Ourika valley. On clear winter days you can see snow both directions.

Leg 3 — Pass to Aït Ben Haddou (~65 km, 75 min): the road descends into ochre country, the vegetation drops away, and pink adobe villages start appearing. There's an optional 40-minute detour to the Telouet kasbah — old Glaoui summer palace, mostly ruins, but worth it if you have time.

    Photo stops we always make

    • km 60 — first Atlas viewpoint above Aït Barka
    • Taddert — walnut trees + red rooftops
    • Tizi n'Tichka pass — south-facing viewpoint
    • Telouet kasbah detour (optional, +40 min return)
    • Anmiter — palm oasis 5 km before Aït Ben Haddou
    • Aït Ben Haddou itself — best from the far river bank at golden hour

    Practical

    • Fuel: fill up in Marrakech; next reliable station is Ouarzazate (past Aït Ben Haddou)
    • Sickness: the switchbacks can be rough — motion-sickness tablets help
    • Winter: check road status; snow occasionally closes the pass for a few hours
    • Money: Aït Ben Haddou has one ATM, often empty — bring cash from Marrakech

    Frequently asked

It's a well-paved national highway with barriers on the exposed sections. Slow, yes; dangerous, no. Local drivers know it in their sleep.

Yes but it's a long day — 8+ hours in the car for maybe 2 hours at the site. Better as part of a 3-day Merzouga loop where you sleep in Ouarzazate or Dadès.

90 minutes to walk up, explore the granary at the top, take photos and come back down. Add another hour if you want lunch on the far bank looking at it.
