Winding road through the High Atlas toward the Sahara

The number one logistics question we get: how far is Merzouga from Marrakech, and can you do it in a day? Short answer: 560 km, 8–9 hours driving, and please don't try it in a day. Here's the full picture.

The distance and why it's a 2-day drive

Merzouga sits about 560 km southeast of Marrakech, on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes near the Algerian border. That's 8–9 hours of actual driving across the High Atlas and down into the pre-Sahara — before any stops. Cram it into one day and you'd arrive after dark, exhausted, having seen nothing. That's why every good operator splits it over two days going out.

Day 1 — Marrakech to Dadès (or Merzouga area)

    • Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) — 2 hours
    • → Aït Ben Haddou UNESCO kasbah — lunch + visit
    • → Ouarzazate (film studios) — short stop
    • → Dadès or Tinghir valley — overnight (~7 hours total driving)

Day 2 — Dadès to the dunes

    • Todra Gorge — morning walk between 300 m cliffs
    • → Erfoud / Rissani — fossils and the last town before the sand
    • → Merzouga — arrive mid-afternoon
    • Sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi + night at desert camp

Can you fly or take a bus instead?

There's a small airport at Errachidia (~2 hours from Merzouga) with limited domestic flights, but for most travellers the road trip IS the experience — Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges are half the reason to go. Public buses (Supratours/CTM) run to Rissani but leave you without the stops and the camel camp logistics.

    Frequently asked

About 560 km southeast, which is 8–9 hours of driving one way across the High Atlas.

Physically possible but strongly discouraged — you'd arrive after dark having missed Aït Ben Haddou, the gorges and the whole point of the route. It's split over two days for good reason.

No. The road is fully paved all the way. A 4x4 is only used for the last stretch into the dunes and optional off-road detours; a comfortable minivan handles the whole route.

Three days minimum (2 days driving with one desert night). Four days is more comfortable and adds a second night in the Sahara.
