"A Sahara desert tour from Marrakech" covers more than one trip — it's a family of routes that all leave the same city, cross the same mountain pass, and end with a camel ride into a different set of dunes. This guide covers how the route actually works, what a typical day looks like, and what changes between a 2-day, 3-day and 4-day trip, so you know what you're booking before you compare prices.

The route every Sahara tour follows

Leaving Marrakech, every desert-bound vehicle climbs the same road: the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 m the highest year-round mountain crossing in Morocco, with switchbacks through the High Atlas and viewpoints over Berber villages built into the hillside. On the far side, the road drops into UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen ksar you've likely seen in film and TV productions shot in Morocco, followed by a stop at Kasbah Taourirt in Ouarzazate.

From Ouarzazate, routes split. The shorter trips head south to Zagora and the Draa Valley's palm groves. The longer trips continue east through the Dades and Todra gorges before dropping to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. The most remote route goes south-west from Zagora toward Mhamid and the Erg Chegaga, well beyond where the paved road reaches.

For the fuller trade-off — driving times, camp style, who each option suits — the comparison below goes deeper than this overview.

A typical day on the road

    • 07:30 — pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad
    • Morning — cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass, photo stops over the High Atlas
    • Midday — guided visit of Aït Ben Haddou (about 2 hours) and Kasbah Taourirt in Ouarzazate
    • Afternoon — continue toward Dades/Todra (3-day route) or straight to Zagora (2-day route)
    • Sunset — camel ride into the dunes, arrival at the Berber desert camp
    • Evening — dinner and Berber music around the fire; overnight in the camp
    • Sunrise — early wake-up to watch the sun come up over the dunes, then breakfast and the drive back

    Shared or private

Shared departures run to a published per-person price and a fixed group schedule — the Zagora and Merzouga trips both work this way. A private tour uses your own vehicle and driver, moves at your pace, and is quoted for your group rather than per person; the private Merzouga tour and the Chegaga trek are both arranged this way, with the price confirmed in writing before you pay.

What's included, and what you pay locally

Across the shared tours, round-trip transport, hotel pickup, the camel ride and the desert camp (dinner and breakfast included) are covered in the published price. Lunches on the road are paid locally, at about 100–150 MAD (€10–15) per stop, along with the Aït Ben Haddou entrance ticket (about €3) and any tips.

Best time for a Sahara tour

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) give the most comfortable days and cool-but-manageable nights. Summer (June–August) is workable but the desert can exceed 45°C at midday — the Chegaga trek in particular is not recommended in July or August. Winter (December–February) brings cold desert nights, sometimes near freezing; camps provide blankets and a heater, and the Luxury tent tier on the Merzouga tour adds air conditioning that also heats.

    What to pack

    • A warm layer for desert nights, even in summer — temperatures drop fast after dark
    • Comfortable closed shoes for the camp and any short walks
    • A scarf or buff for dust on the drive and the camel ride
    • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
    • Cash for lunches, entrance tickets and tips, which are paid locally

    Frequently asked

Two days reaches Zagora with smaller dunes; three days reaches Merzouga's tall Erg Chebbi dunes; a four-day private trek from Mhamid reaches the remote Erg Chegaga. Three days is the most common first-timer choice.

Every route crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass through the High Atlas and stops at UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou before continuing toward the dunes. It's a genuinely scenic drive, not just transit time.

No — lunches on the road are paid locally, at about 100–150 MAD (€10–15) each, along with the Aït Ben Haddou entrance fee (about €3).

No. The shared 2 and 3-day tours are group departures with hotel pickup, a set itinerary and an English/French/Spanish-speaking driver — no independent planning required.

It includes transport, hotel pickup, a guide at Aït Ben Haddou, a 1-hour camel ride, a night in a Berber camp, dinner and breakfast; lunches are extra. Zagora is not Merzouga: its dunes are smaller than Erg Chebbi, and you trade dune size for one night instead of two. Climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass, spend the morning in UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou with a local guide, visit Kasbah Taourirt in Ouarzazate, then continue south to Zagora for a sunset camel ride and a night in a Berber desert camp under the stars. Wake up to sunrise over the dunes and return to Marrakech via Ouarzazate.
