Ourika River running below riverside restaurant terraces in the High Atlas foothills near Marrakech

When Marrakech bakes in summer heat, locals and visitors head south into the Ourika Valley. This guide is only about the summer question: how much cooler it is, when to go to avoid the crowds, and how to plan a hot-weather day there. For the full day itself, the waterfall walk and what to pack, see our Ourika Valley guide.

How much cooler is Ourika in summer?

Noticeably. In June, July and August the medina can pass 40°C, while the Ourika Valley, in the High Atlas foothills about 65 km south-east, usually stays around 28–32°C. The waterfall path at Setti Fatma is shaded and wet underfoot, and lunch is served at tables placed in the shallow river, which is the main reason locals come.

    Avoid the weekend crowds

Summer weekends are when Marrakech families head to the valley, so the river restaurants and the path to the falls get busy on Saturdays and Sundays. Go Monday to Thursday if you can. The shared day trip picks you up at 09:45 and has you back in Marrakech around 17:30, so you spend the hottest hours of the day in the valley rather than the city.

    Plan a hot-weather day

    • Closed shoes with grip: the walk to the falls takes 30–45 minutes each way, with rocky sections and river crossings that stay wet
    • A hat, sun cream and a refillable water bottle for the stretches in the sun
    • A light layer: the valley is cooler than the city, especially near the water
    • Dirhams in small notes for lunch (about 80–120 MAD per person) and a tip for the waterfall guide

    Other summer escapes from Marrakech

Ourika is the shortest drive, but not the only cool day out. The Atlantic keeps Essaouira mild in summer, and at the Ouzoud waterfalls you can swim in the natural pool at the base from June to September. Both are longer days, about 10 and 11 hours.
