Best day trips from Marrakech: 9 trips ranked and compared
By Rachid — Owner and itinerary editor, Rachid Excursions

These are the nine day and half-day trips we run from Marrakech, with prices, times, drive time and what you still pay on the day, all taken from our tour pages and checked again on 7 October 2026. The order is our judgement for a first visit, not a popularity ranking: time at the place beats time on the road, and a price that covers more beats one that covers less.
The top five compared: price, hours and who each suits

1. Ourika Valley: the best first day trip (€18)
Ourika gives the most scenery for the least time in the vehicle. After a 09:45 pickup and about 1h15 south-east, you stop at Berber villages along the river, then a local guide leads the walk from Setti Fatma to the Ourika waterfalls: 30–45 minutes each way, easy to moderate, with rocky sections. Lunch is at a riverside restaurant with tables in the water, and you are back around 17:30.
The €18 covers transport, pickup and the waterfall guide; lunch (about 80–120 MAD), drinks and tips are extra. Skip it if you want one big landmark: the Ourika falls are far smaller than Ouzoud's 110 m drop.
2. Essaouira: the best relaxed day (€20)
Essaouira is the only full-day trip where most of the time is yours. After an 08:45 pickup and a stop at a women's argan oil cooperative, you reach the Atlantic around 11:30 with about five hours for the UNESCO-listed medina, the Skala de la Kasbah ramparts, the fishing port and the beach. The drive is about 2h45–3h each way, and you are back by 19:00.
The €20 covers the minivan, pickup, fuel, tolls and the cooperative stop. Grilled fish at the port stalls is about 80–120 MAD, a 10–20 MAD tip is customary if you photograph the goats in the argan trees, and beach activities are optional extras. A private vehicle is quoted on request.
3. Ouzoud waterfalls: the best single natural sight (€23)
Ouzoud is the trip for one big sight: Morocco's tallest waterfall, a 110 m drop in the Middle Atlas about 150 km north-east of Marrakech. The shared trip leaves at 08:45 and arrives around 11:45; you walk a shaded, mostly paved path to the base (30–45 minutes, steeper coming back) and will almost always see the wild Barbary macaques. Back around 19:30, it is roughly 6 hours of driving for 4–5 hours at the falls.
Paid on site: the boat under the spray (about 20 MAD) and lunch on a terrace (about 100–150 MAD). There is no guide at the falls on the shared trip. The private day, €160 for two, starts at 07:30 and includes an English-speaking guide and the boat; lunch is still paid locally.
4. Agafay desert evening: the best if you only have an afternoon (€35)
Agafay is a rocky stone desert about 30 km (45 minutes) south-west of Marrakech. It has no sand dunes, so book it for the light, not as a Sahara substitute. After a 14:00 pickup you ride a quad for 1 hour, swap to a camel for 30 minutes as the sun sets behind the Atlas, then eat a buffet dinner at a Berber camp before a fire show and music. You are back around 22:00.
Dinner is part of the €35, so drinks and tips are the only listed extras. No licence is needed for the quad; whether you ride your own or share one is confirmed in writing.
5. Aït Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate: the best for history, and the longest day (€30)
This is the only day trip that crosses the High Atlas. You leave at 07:30 over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), a local guide walks you through the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a set for Gladiator and Game of Thrones, and in Ouarzazate you visit Kasbah Taourirt. At about 4 hours each way, two-thirds of the 12-hour day is on the road.
Paid on the day: lunch (about 100–150 MAD), the Kasbah Taourirt ticket and a tip for the guide. Go if the kasbahs are why you came; otherwise the same ksar is on day one of our Zagora and Merzouga desert tours.
6. Imlil: the best for walking in the High Atlas (€120 per car)
Imlil is a mountain village about 1h30 south of Marrakech, below Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), Morocco's highest peak. On this private day a local Berber guide leads a walk through walnut orchards, terraces and stone villages, from a gentle 1-hour stroll to a 3-hour uphill hike towards Sidi Chamharouch, ending with mint tea in a Berber family home.
The €120 is per car for up to 3–4 passengers, €30–40 each in a full car. The family's home-cooked lunch is optional at about 100–150 MAD per person, and a mule is about 200 MAD. Bring a warm layer for the altitude.
7. Palmeraie quad & camel: the best half day close to town (€30)
The Palmeraie is the palm grove on the northern edge of Marrakech, about 20 minutes away. Pick a 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00 slot for 2 hours of quad or buggy with a guide, a mint tea break and a 1-hour camel ride in a Tuareg gandoura, about 4 hours in all. The 16:00 slot gets the golden-hour light.
The tour page lists no extras beyond the €30, and no licence is needed. Choose it over Agafay for twice the riding time; choose Agafay for a desert landscape and dinner.
8. Three Valleys: the best private scenic drive (€120 per car)
This private day links the Ourika Valley, the Asni valley below Mount Toubkal and the Kik Plateau, with a photo stop above Lalla Takerkoust lake. It runs about 8–10 hours and needs no long hike: the stops are short walks, roadside cafés and, on market day, the Asni market. That makes it the easiest full day for older travellers.
The €120 per car (up to 3–4 passengers) covers the vehicle, an English, French or Spanish-speaking driver, fuel and tolls. Lunch is about 80–120 MAD per person, and child seats can be arranged on request.
9. Sunrise hot-air balloon: the splurge (€100)
Pickup is between 06:00 and 06:30 for a launch in the Palmeraie, about 30 minutes away, and about 1 hour in the air from just before sunrise, with the Atlas on the horizon; the flight does not cross the medina. Breakfast with mint tea and a flight certificate follow on landing, and you are back around 10:00.
The €100 is per person in a shared basket. We arrange the booking and transfer; a balloon company named in your written confirmation operates the flight. Flights only take off in calm weather, and a wind or rain cancellation means a free new date or a full refund, so fly early in your stay. Minimum age is 6.
How to choose by traveller
- First visit with one free day: Ourika Valley, the full-day trip with the least driving and a guide for the waterfall walk
- Families with young children: Ourika, or the Palmeraie quad and camel ride with children as passengers; Ouzoud works if they cope with an 11-hour day; avoid the 12-hour Aït Ben Haddou day with toddlers
- Older travellers: the private Three Valleys day (no long hike) or Essaouira, whose medina is compact and walkable; the balloon needs you to stand for an hour and climb into a basket
- Couples: the Agafay evening for the sunset and dinner, or a private day (Imlil, Three Valleys, or Ouzoud at €160 for two) if you want your own pace
- Solo travellers on a budget: the shared trips, Ourika €18, Essaouira €20, Ouzoud €23 and Aït Ben Haddou €30, all priced per person
- Groups of three or four: the per-car private days, where €120 for Imlil or the Three Valleys comes to €30–40 each
- Walkers: Imlil, where the route can stretch to a 3-hour uphill hike
- Photographers: the Agafay sunset, the 16:00 Palmeraie slot or the balloon at sunrise
How to choose by season
| Season | Best picks | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (March–May) | Ourika, Ouzoud, Imlil, Agafay | Ourika is at its greenest, with the waterfalls at their strongest; mild evenings in Agafay |
| Summer (June–August) | Essaouira, Ourika, Ouzoud, Agafay evening | The medina averages about 38 °C; Ourika stays about 8–10 °C cooler, the Atlantic keeps Essaouira mild, and you can swim at the base of Ouzoud from June to September. Agafay is an evening-only trip in summer |
| Autumn (September–November) | All nine | Imlil and Agafay are at their best, and the long drives are more comfortable |
| Winter (December–February) | Essaouira, Ourika, Three Valleys, Imlil | Clear days and cold mornings and nights. Snow closes the Tizi n'Tichka pass a handful of times each winter, which affects the Aït Ben Haddou day; Imlil is dramatic under snow but needs a warm jacket |
Can you combine two trips in one day?
Only the short ones. The balloon has you back at your hotel around 10:00 and the Agafay pickup is at 14:00, so a sunrise flight and a desert evening fit into one long day. Two full-day trips do not combine: Ourika lies south-east of Marrakech and Ouzoud north-east, and each shared trip fills the day. If you book two of the 10–12 hour trips, leave a quiet day between them.
Booking, pickup and payment
- Shared departures are confirmed for your specific date in writing before payment; no fixed timetable is guaranteed

- Carry dirhams in small notes for lunch, the Ouzoud boat and tips; the locally paid amounts on the tour pages are quoted in MAD

It includes 1 hour of quad biking, a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, a buffet dinner at a Berber camp and a fire show; drinks and tips are extra. Agafay is a stone desert 45 minutes from the city, not the Sahara sand dunes — for dunes, take the 3-day Merzouga tour. Get picked up at 14:00, ride quad for an hour across the lunar stone desert with the High Atlas on the horizon, swap the engine for a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, then settle into a Berber camp for a buffet dinner (grilled meats, chicken, salads, couscous) and a traditional fire show under the stars. Back at your riad by 22:00.
Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou — Day Trip

Leave at 07:30 and climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) with panoramic Berber-village stops, then spend the morning inside Aït Ben Haddou — the UNESCO-listed earthen ksar famous from Gladiator and Game of Thrones — with a local guide. Continue to Ouarzazate to visit the Kasbah Taourirt, share a group lunch on site and drive back through the mountains to Marrakech, arriving around 19:30.
Imlil — Private Tour
Full-day private · Guided hike · Berber home visit
A private day in the High Atlas at the foot of Mount Toubkal — Morocco's highest peak. Your driver picks you up in Marrakech in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle and takes you south to the mountain village of Imlil. There, a local Berber guide leads you on a gentle hike through walnut orchards, terraced fields and stone villages, sharing stories about mountain life. The day ends with a warm welcome inside a Berber family home for mint tea and, if you wish, a traditional home-cooked lunch (paid on the spot).
Palmeraie — Quad & Camel
Half day · 2h quad or buggy · 1h camel · Berber tea break
A half-day of quad biking and a camel ride in the Marrakech Palmeraie for €30 / MAD 300 per person, about 4 hours with pickup at 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00. It includes hotel or riad pickup, 2 hours of quad or buggy with a guide and helmet, a 1-hour camel ride and a Berber tea break; no driving licence is needed. The Palmeraie is the vast oasis of hundreds of thousands of date palms right on the northern edge of the city. Kick up dust on a quad or buggy for two full hours through the palm groves and Berber tracks, pause for photos, then trade the engine for a one-hour camel ride wrapped in a traditional Tuareg gandoura, and finish with sweet mint tea under the palms. Pickup at 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00 — morning, afternoon or golden hour — confirmed for your date, so you can slot it around your other Marrakech plans.
3 Valleys — Private Tour
Full-day private · Ourika · Asni · Kik Plateau
A private full-day escape from Marrakech through three very different High Atlas valleys. Start in the lush Ourika Valley with its river, small waterfalls and Berber villages. Continue to the quieter, more rugged Asni Valley at the foot of Mount Toubkal, then climb to the wide-open Kik Plateau for sweeping panoramas of the High Atlas and Lalla Takerkoust lake. Private driver, your own pace, hotel pickup in Marrakech.
Hot Air Balloon — Shared Flight
Shared sunrise flight over the palm groves · €100 per person
A shared sunrise balloon flight for €100 / MAD 1,000 per person. You are collected from your Marrakech hotel or riad between 06:00 and 06:30, take off from the Palmeraie just before sunrise for about an hour in the air with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon, then have a Moroccan breakfast with mint tea on landing and receive a personalised flight certificate. You are back at your hotel around 10:00.
