Marrakech balloon flights: weather, cancellations and what happens next
By Rachid — Owner and itinerary editor, Rachid Excursions

A sunrise balloon flight is the one Marrakech activity where the weather, not your itinerary, has the final word. That is not a reason to skip it; it is a reason to book it the right way. Here is why flights happen at dawn, what a weather cancellation means for your booking, and the handful of details to have in writing before you pay.
Why balloons fly at dawn
A hot-air balloon has no engine to push against the wind; it travels with the air around it. The early morning, before the sun heats the ground, is usually when that air is calmest and most settled. As the day warms up, rising air and stronger wind make take-off and landing harder. That is why pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad is between 06:00 and 06:30, take-off is just before sunrise, and you are back at your hotel around 10:00.
It also explains where you fly. The launch area is the Palmeraie on the edge of Marrakech, about 30 minutes from the city centre: open palm groves with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon. The flight does not cross the medina.
What a weather cancellation means
For safety, flights only take off in calm weather. If your flight is cancelled because of wind or rain, you get a free new date or a full refund, so you do not lose your money because the weather turned. The table below sets out the situations side by side; the terms on your written confirmation are the ones that apply.
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Flight cancelled for wind or rain | Free new date or full refund |
| You cancel at least 7 days before departure | Full refund of any advance payment |
| You cancel or change later than that | Handled under the written booking terms |
| The weather is calm | Pickup 06:00–06:30, about 1 hour in the air, breakfast and certificate, back around 10:00 |
Book it for the start of your stay
A free new date only helps if you are still in Marrakech to use it. Book the flight for your last morning and a cancellation leaves the refund as your only option. Put it on your first or second morning instead, keep another early morning free, and plan day trips around it. A 06:00 pickup also sits badly after a late evening, such as an Agafay dinner that ends around 22:00, so keep the night before quiet.
What to get in writing before you pay
Rachid Excursions organises your booking and your hotel transfer. The flight itself is operated by a balloon company, which is named in your written confirmation. Before paying, ask for:
- The name of the operating balloon company
- Its pilot and insurance details
- Your pickup time and pickup point, especially if your riad is deep in the medina
- How you will be told if the flight is cancelled, and how the new date or refund is arranged
- The cancellation deadline that applies to you: for any advance payment, cancelling at least 7 days before departure gives a full refund, and later changes follow the written booking terms
- Payment timing and any deposit, which are confirmed in writing before booking
Age, mobility and health
- Minimum age is 6
- You stand for about an hour and step in and out of the basket, so reasonable mobility is needed
- The flight is not recommended during pregnancy
- Mention any recent surgery or mobility limit before booking
- Travel insurance is not included, so check that your own policy covers the activity
What to wear
Dawn in the Palmeraie is chilly even in summer. Wear warm layers, closed shoes and a light jacket, and bring a hat and sunglasses. Put your phone or camera on a strap. Several thin layers beat one heavy coat, because by breakfast you will want to take one off.
What the €100 includes
The shared flight is €100 / MAD 1,000 per person and includes the round-trip hotel transfer, the safety briefing, about 1 hour in the air, a personalised flight certificate and a Moroccan breakfast with mint tea. Tips, any photos or videos sold by the balloon operator, transport from accommodation outside Marrakech and travel insurance are not included.
