Is a hot air balloon in Marrakech worth it? What to expect, and what €100 covers
By Rachid — Owner and itinerary editor, Rachid Excursions

At €100, the sunrise balloon flight is the most expensive half day we sell in Marrakech, so it is fair to ask whether it is worth it before you set a 06:00 alarm. This guide covers what you actually see from the basket, how the morning runs, who should skip it, and what our published €100 flight covers, so you can decide whether it suits your trip.
Is a hot air balloon in Marrakech worth it?
Worth it if you want the Palmeraie palm groves and the Atlas Mountains on the horizon at sunrise, and a 06:00–06:30 pickup does not spoil your day. The €100 covers a whole morning rather than the flight alone: about an hour in the air plus the hotel transfer, breakfast and a certificate. Less worth it if you hoped to see the medina from the air (flights launch from the Palmeraie and do not cross it), if you cannot stand for about an hour, or if your stay has no spare morning in case the weather cancels the flight.

How to compare balloon offers
If you are weighing our flight against another offer, the headline number matters less than what sits behind it. These details change what you get with any company, so ask about each one before comparing:
- Shared or private basket: a private flight for your party costs more than a seat in a shared basket
- Hotel transfer: whether pickup and drop-off are included, and from which areas
- Breakfast: whether a meal is served after landing, and what it is
- Extras sold on the morning: photos, videos or upgraded breakfasts
- Flight time: how long you are actually in the air, not how long the whole morning lasts
- Weather terms: whether a cancelled flight gives you a new date, a refund, or neither
A lower headline price that leaves out the transfer or the breakfast does not stay lower once you add them back, so compare written totals with the same inclusions.
Who organises and who operates the flight
Rachid Excursions organises your booking and your hotel transfer. The flight itself is operated by a balloon company, which is named in your written confirmation. Ask us for that name, and for the company's pilot and insurance details, before you pay. Payment timing and any deposit are also confirmed in writing before booking.
How the morning runs
Pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad is between 06:00 and 06:30, followed by about 30 minutes to the launch site in the Palmeraie on the edge of the city. After the safety briefing you take off just before sunrise for about an hour, with the palm groves below and the Atlas Mountains on the horizon; the flight does not cross the medina. After landing you receive your certificate and sit down to a Moroccan breakfast with mint tea, and you are back at your hotel around 10:00.
Weather, age and mobility
- Flights only take off in calm weather; a cancellation for wind or rain means a free new date or a full refund
- Book one of your first mornings in Marrakech so a new date is still possible
- Minimum age is 6; you stand for about an hour and step in and out of the basket
- Not recommended during pregnancy; mention any recent surgery or mobility limit before booking
- Dawn in the Palmeraie is cold even in summer: wear warm layers, closed shoes and a light jacket
Is it worth €100?
If you want sunrise over the palm groves with the Atlas on the horizon, and you are happy to share a basket and set an early alarm, the €100 covers the whole morning, with tips the only thing left to budget for. If you need a private basket, cannot stand for an hour, or have no spare morning in case the weather cancels the flight, think it through before booking.

Tours mentioned above
Hot Air Balloon — Shared Flight
Shared sunrise flight over the palm groves · €100 per person
A shared sunrise balloon flight for €100 / MAD 1,000 per person. You are collected from your Marrakech hotel or riad between 06:00 and 06:30, take off from the Palmeraie just before sunrise for about an hour in the air with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon, then have a Moroccan breakfast with mint tea on landing and receive a personalised flight certificate. You are back at your hotel around 10:00.
Agafay Desert — Sunset & Dinner
Afternoon & evening · Quad + camel · Buffet dinner · Fire show under the stars
An Agafay desert afternoon and evening from Marrakech for €35 / MAD 350 per person, 14:00 to 22:00 with hotel or riad pickup. It includes 1 hour of quad biking, a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, a buffet dinner at a Berber camp and a fire show; drinks and tips are extra. Agafay is a stone desert 45 minutes from the city, not the Sahara sand dunes — for dunes, take the 3-day Merzouga tour. Get picked up at 14:00, ride quad for an hour across the lunar stone desert with the High Atlas on the horizon, swap the engine for a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, then settle into a Berber camp for a buffet dinner (grilled meats, chicken, salads, couscous) and a traditional fire show under the stars. Back at your riad by 22:00.
Palmeraie — Quad & Camel
Half day · 2h quad or buggy · 1h camel · Berber tea break
A half-day of quad biking and a camel ride in the Marrakech Palmeraie for €30 / MAD 300 per person, about 4 hours with pickup at 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00. It includes hotel or riad pickup, 2 hours of quad or buggy with a guide and helmet, a 1-hour camel ride and a Berber tea break; no driving licence is needed. The Palmeraie is the vast oasis of hundreds of thousands of date palms right on the northern edge of the city. Kick up dust on a quad or buggy for two full hours through the palm groves and Berber tracks, pause for photos, then trade the engine for a one-hour camel ride wrapped in a traditional Tuareg gandoura, and finish with sweet mint tea under the palms. Pickup at 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00 — morning, afternoon or golden hour — confirmed for your date, so you can slot it around your other Marrakech plans.
