First Time on a Quad in Marrakech: Licence, Safety, Kids and What to Wear
By Rachid — Owner and itinerary editor, Rachid Excursions

Quad biking is one of the easiest ways to fill a free afternoon in Marrakech — no licence, no experience needed, and a guide riding alongside you the whole time. The only real decision is where: the palm groves of the Palmeraie on the edge of the city, or the open stone desert of Agafay further out, which turns the ride into a full sunset evening with dinner.
Where to ride a quad near Marrakech
Two locations cover almost every quad biking trip sold in Marrakech. The Palmeraie is the vast palm grove on the northern edge of the city — about 20 minutes from your hotel — where you ride dusty tracks between date palms. Agafay is a stone desert about 45 minutes south-west, rolling bare hills with the High Atlas on the horizon. Neither has sand dunes; for that you need a multi-day trip to Zagora or Merzouga.

What a quad ride actually involves
Every trip starts the same way: a hotel or riad pickup, a short transfer, then a safety briefing and helmet before you get on the quad. A guide leads the group and sets the pace, so first-timers are never left to work it out alone. Both locations also pair the quad with a camel ride — a slower, calmer way to see the same scenery once the engine noise stops.
Palmeraie: more riding time, shorter day
The Palmeraie trip runs about 4 hours door to door, with three pickup slots — 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00 — so it slots around the rest of your day. You get 2 hours of quad or buggy riding through the palm groves, then a 1-hour camel ride in a traditional Tuareg gandoura, finishing with mint tea under the palms. It's the pick if riding time is the point and you want your evening free.
Agafay: sunset, dinner and a fire show
The Agafay trip is built around the evening: pickup at 14:00, an hour of quad across the stone desert, then a 30-minute camel ride as the sun sets behind the Atlas, a buffet dinner at a Berber camp, and a fire show before the drive back around 22:00. It's the pick if you'd rather have the whole evening — quad, sunset, dinner — sorted in one booking.
What to wear for quad biking in Marrakech
- Closed shoes — sandals aren't practical on a quad or a camel
- Long sleeves and trousers you don't mind getting dusty
- Sunglasses, and a scarf or buff for the dust
- Sun protection for daytime slots; a warm layer for the Agafay evening
- Small notes for tips, and for drinks at the Agafay camp (not included)
Do I need a licence, and is it safe?
No driving licence is needed for either trip. Every ride starts with a safety briefing and a helmet, the pace is set by the guide, and if you've never ridden a quad before they'll stay close for the first few minutes. Whether each adult rides their own quad or shares one isn't stated on either tour page — ask for it to be confirmed in writing along with your price and pickup time when you book.
Quad biking with children
Both trips welcome children as passengers rather than solo riders. On the Palmeraie, kids ride behind an adult on the quad or in a buggy, and children from around 5 can do the camel ride with a handler walking alongside. Agafay works the same way — children ride as passengers on the quad and on their own camel with a handler on foot.

Palmeraie — Quad & Camel
Half day · 2h quad or buggy · 1h camel · Berber tea break
A half-day of quad biking and a camel ride in the Marrakech Palmeraie for €30 / MAD 300 per person, about 4 hours with pickup at 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00. It includes hotel or riad pickup, 2 hours of quad or buggy with a guide and helmet, a 1-hour camel ride and a Berber tea break; no driving licence is needed. The Palmeraie is the vast oasis of hundreds of thousands of date palms right on the northern edge of the city. Kick up dust on a quad or buggy for two full hours through the palm groves and Berber tracks, pause for photos, then trade the engine for a one-hour camel ride wrapped in a traditional Tuareg gandoura, and finish with sweet mint tea under the palms. Pickup at 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00 — morning, afternoon or golden hour — confirmed for your date, so you can slot it around your other Marrakech plans.
Agafay Desert — Sunset & Dinner
Afternoon & evening · Quad + camel · Buffet dinner · Fire show under the stars
An Agafay desert afternoon and evening from Marrakech for €35 / MAD 350 per person, 14:00 to 22:00 with hotel or riad pickup. It includes 1 hour of quad biking, a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, a buffet dinner at a Berber camp and a fire show; drinks and tips are extra. Agafay is a stone desert 45 minutes from the city, not the Sahara sand dunes — for dunes, take the 3-day Merzouga tour. Get picked up at 14:00, ride quad for an hour across the lunar stone desert with the High Atlas on the horizon, swap the engine for a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, then settle into a Berber camp for a buffet dinner (grilled meats, chicken, salads, couscous) and a traditional fire show under the stars. Back at your riad by 22:00.
