Agafay Desert from Marrakech: is it worth visiting? The 2026 guide
By Rachid — Owner and itinerary editor, Rachid Excursions

If you've only got a day or an evening but still want a desert, Agafay is the answer everyone's searching for in 2026. It's a rocky stone desert 30 km southwest of Marrakech — about 45 minutes by car — and while it's technically not the Sahara, the lunar hills framed by the snow-capped Atlas make it one of the most photogenic escapes near the city.
Agafay, the Palmeraie, Zagora or Merzouga?
| Option | Price | Time needed | Landscape | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agafay sunset, quad & dinner | €35 | 14:00 → 22:00 (about 8 h) | Stone desert (hammada): rocky hills, no sand dunes | A desert sunset and dinner when you only have an afternoon |
| Palmeraie quad & camel | €30 | About 4 h; pickup 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00 | Palm grove on the edge of Marrakech; not a desert | The most riding: 2 h of quad or buggy and a 1-hour camel ride |
| Zagora, 2 days | €60 | 2 days / 1 night | Sand dunes, but smaller than Merzouga's | The shortest trip to real sand and a night in a desert camp |
| Merzouga, 3 days | From €70 (€70 / €95 / €120 tiers) | 3 days / 2 nights | The tall Erg Chebbi sand dunes | The classic Sahara dunes, if you can give it three days |
Two things this table settles. Agafay is a stone desert, so it has no sand dunes at all; you go for the light, the Atlas view and the evening. And Zagora is not Merzouga: Zagora does have sand dunes, but they are smaller than Erg Chebbi, and you trade dune size for one night away instead of two. If tall dunes are the point, only Merzouga gives you them.
Is Agafay worth visiting, and is it a real desert?
Agafay is a desert in the sense that matters on the ground: dry, bare, rocky hills with the High Atlas on the horizon. What it is not is a sand desert. It is a stone plateau (hammada) close to Marrakech, not part of the Sahara's dune fields, which lie hundreds of kilometres away on the far side of the Atlas. Whether it is worth your evening depends on what you came for.
- Worth it if you have one afternoon, want a sunset with the Atlas behind it, want quad, camel and dinner in a single booking, or are travelling with children or older relatives who should not spend two days on the road
- Skip it if sand dunes are the point (go to Zagora in 2 days or Merzouga in 3), if you want an empty desert with nobody else at dinner, or if organised evenings with a show are not for you
Agafay vs the Sahara — set expectations first
Let's be honest, because disappointment with Agafay usually comes from mismatched expectations: Agafay has no golden sand dunes. It's a landscape of dry, rolling stone hills and cracked riverbeds — dramatic and moon-like, especially at golden hour, but not the Erg Chebbi postcard. Here's the honest side-by-side so you pick the right one.
| Agafay | Sahara (Merzouga) | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Marrakech | 30 km (45 min) | 560 km (8–9 h, 3-day trip) |
| Landscape | Rocky stone desert, no dunes | Golden sand dunes to 150 m |
| Time needed | Half-day, evening or 1 night | Minimum 3 days |
| Camel ride | Short sunset ride (30 min on our €35 evening) | 1-hour ride into the dunes, included in the tour |
| Overnight | Glamping camps, priced by each camp | Berber camp included in tour |
| Our published price | €35 per person, dinner included | From €70 per person (3-day shared tour) |
| Best for | Short trips, couples, families, evenings | Bucket-list dunes, multi-day adventure |
Things to do in Agafay — and what our evening costs
Agafay isn't just scenery: quad biking, camel rides, dinner camps and glamping all operate there. Camps price their own stays and standalone activities, so compare written totals with the same inclusions. Here is exactly what our published Agafay evening covers:
| Experience | Times | Published price | Included | Not included |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agafay sunset: quad, camel, dinner & fire show | 14:00 → 22:00 | €35 / MAD 350 per person | Hotel or riad pickup, 1 h quad, 30-min sunset camel ride, buffet dinner, fire show and music | Drinks, tips, extra quad time or buggy upgrade |
What the €35 evening includes, hour by hour
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 14:00 | Pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech |
| About 14:45 | Arrival in the Agafay stone desert after a 45-minute drive south-west |
| Late afternoon | Helmet and safety briefing, then 1 hour of quad across the stone hills with a guide; no licence needed |
| Sunset | A 30-minute camel ride at walking pace as the sun drops behind the mountains (optional) |
| Evening | Welcome mint tea at the Berber camp, buffet dinner (grilled meats, chicken, Moroccan salads, couscous, dessert), then a fire show and music |
| About 22:00 | Back at your hotel or riad |
Two things to settle when you book: whether you ride your own quad or share one, which is confirmed in writing, and vegetarian food if you need it, which is available on request. If you would rather skip the camel, say so and you can go straight to the camp for tea and the sunset. Drinks at the camp, tips for the guide, camel handlers and camp staff, and extra quad time or a buggy upgrade are not included.

The honest downsides nobody mentions
- It genuinely isn't sand — if a sand dune is on your bucket list, Agafay will disappoint; do Merzouga instead
- Some big camps feel like busy event venues at dinner, not a quiet desert — ask how many covers they seat
- Midday in summer (June–August) is brutally hot with no shade — evening only
- Very cheap 'deals' often drop the hotel transfer or rush 30 people through one seating — confirm what's included in writing
Best time to go
| Season | Daytime | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | 25–30°C | Best — clear skies, mild evenings |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 24–30°C | Best — fewer crowds, ideal for camping |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 35–42°C | Evening/sunset tours only |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | 18–22°C | Lovely days, cold nights — pack layers |
Whatever the season, book the sunset slot. The golden-hour light on Agafay's rocks — glowing orange and pink with the snow-capped Atlas behind — is the whole reason to come, and midday flattens it completely.
What to bring and wear
- A warm layer or jacket: the plateau cools 10–15°C after dark, all year, and winter nights are cold
- Closed shoes, not sandals, for the quad and the camel ride over rocky ground
- Long trousers and long sleeves for the quad, in clothes you don't mind getting dusty
- Sunglasses and a scarf or buff against the dust thrown up by the quads
- Dirhams in small notes for drinks and tips — there are no ATMs in Agafay
- A charged phone or camera: the sunset is the reason to come
Insider tips
- Book the sunset slot, not midday — light and temperature are both far better
- Confirm hotel transfer is included — the 45-min drive should never be a surprise add-on
- For families, a quad + camel combo keeps kids engaged more than a dinner-only slot
- Tell the guide if you've never ridden a quad; they stay close for the first few minutes

Agafay Desert — Sunset & Dinner
Afternoon & evening · Quad + camel · Buffet dinner · Fire show under the stars
An Agafay desert afternoon and evening from Marrakech for €35 / MAD 350 per person, 14:00 to 22:00 with hotel or riad pickup. It includes 1 hour of quad biking, a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, a buffet dinner at a Berber camp and a fire show; drinks and tips are extra. Agafay is a stone desert 45 minutes from the city, not the Sahara sand dunes — for dunes, take the 3-day Merzouga tour. Get picked up at 14:00, ride quad for an hour across the lunar stone desert with the High Atlas on the horizon, swap the engine for a 30-minute camel ride at sunset, then settle into a Berber camp for a buffet dinner (grilled meats, chicken, salads, couscous) and a traditional fire show under the stars. Back at your riad by 22:00.
Palmeraie — Quad & Camel
Half day · 2h quad or buggy · 1h camel · Berber tea break
A half-day of quad biking and a camel ride in the Marrakech Palmeraie for €30 / MAD 300 per person, about 4 hours with pickup at 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00. It includes hotel or riad pickup, 2 hours of quad or buggy with a guide and helmet, a 1-hour camel ride and a Berber tea break; no driving licence is needed. The Palmeraie is the vast oasis of hundreds of thousands of date palms right on the northern edge of the city. Kick up dust on a quad or buggy for two full hours through the palm groves and Berber tracks, pause for photos, then trade the engine for a one-hour camel ride wrapped in a traditional Tuareg gandoura, and finish with sweet mint tea under the palms. Pickup at 09:00, 14:00 or 16:00 — morning, afternoon or golden hour — confirmed for your date, so you can slot it around your other Marrakech plans.
Zagora 2 Days — Desert Tour
2 days · 1 night · Ait Ben Haddou · Ouarzazate · Camel ride · Desert camp
A shared 2-day / 1-night desert trip from Marrakech to Zagora for €60 / MAD 600 per person, leaving at 07:30. It includes transport, hotel pickup, a guide at Aït Ben Haddou, a 1-hour camel ride, a night in a Berber camp, dinner and breakfast; lunches are extra. Zagora is not Merzouga: its dunes are smaller than Erg Chebbi, and you trade dune size for one night instead of two. Climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass, spend the morning in UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou with a local guide, visit Kasbah Taourirt in Ouarzazate, then continue south to Zagora for a sunset camel ride and a night in a Berber desert camp under the stars. Wake up to sunrise over the dunes and return to Marrakech via Ouarzazate.
Merzouga 3 Days — Shared
3 Days · 2 Nights · Normal / Standard / Luxury
A shared 3-day / 2-night desert tour from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, from €70 per person (Standard €95, Luxury €120), leaving at 07:30. The price covers transport, a hotel night in Dades and a night in a desert camp, 2 breakfasts, 2 dinners and a 1-hour camel ride; lunches are extra. The route: cross the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka to the UNESCO kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou and Kasbah Taourirt, then the Rose Valley and Dades. Day 2 drive to Merzouga for a camel ride at sunset and a Berber desert camp with drumming and dinner. Day 3 sunrise over the dunes, then return to Marrakech — or continue to Fes for +€25.
