Choose Agafay if you only have one free day
Agafay makes the most sense when your Marrakech schedule is already full. You can spend the morning in the medina, leave later in the day and still enjoy a desert-style evening without changing hotels or giving up several days of your trip.
That is Agafay's real advantage. It is not a substitute for Merzouga; it solves a different problem.

- Sunset and dinner matter more than giant dunes
- You are staying mainly in Marrakech
- You do not want a long road journey
Choose Merzouga if you came for the Sahara
If the image in your head is golden dunes, a camel trek at sunset and waking up beside the sand, Merzouga is the stronger choice. The journey crosses the High Atlas, passes Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades area, reaches the Erg Chebbi dunes, includes a camel experience and an overnight desert camp before returning toward Marrakech.
The trade-off is time. A large part of the experience is overland travel, but for travelers who genuinely want the Sahara, the route itself is part of the trip.

Is Agafay actually the Sahara?
For trip planning, treat them as two different experiences. Agafay is a rocky desert landscape near Marrakech. Merzouga is the route to the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. If your non-negotiable is sand dunes, choose Merzouga. If your non-negotiable is returning to Marrakech the same evening, choose Agafay.
What if I have two days?
That creates a third option: Zagora. A simple decision rule is one day for Agafay, two days for Zagora and three days for Merzouga. This is often more useful than asking which desert is best in the abstract.
Final verdict
Agafay wins on convenience. Merzouga wins on the classic dune experience. If you are in Marrakech for only a few nights and cannot give up most of the trip, Agafay is the sensible choice. If Morocco's desert is one of the highlights you planned around, give Merzouga the time it needs.
