Ourika vs Ouzoud vs Essaouira: which Marrakech day trip?
Por Rachid — Propietario y editor de itinerarios, Rachid Excursions

Ourika, Ouzoud and Essaouira are the three day trips from Marrakech that travellers weigh against each other most, and they solve different problems. Ourika is the short mountain day. Ouzoud is the long drive to one big natural sight. Essaouira is the long drive to a town where most of the day is yours. The shared prices are close — €18, €23 and €20 per person — so the real choice comes down to time in the car, walking, and what you want to see.

Choose Ourika for the shortest, easiest day
Ourika is the valley Marrakech heads to when the city gets hot, and the day is built for people who do not want to spend it in a vehicle. After about 1h15 on the road you stop at Berber villages and viewpoints, then a local guide leads the 30–45 minute walk along the river from Setti Fatma to the Ourika waterfalls. Lunch is at a riverside restaurant with tables set in the water, at about 80–120 MAD. You are back in Marrakech around 17:30, early enough for a hammam or dinner.
Choose Ouzoud for the biggest waterfall
Ouzoud is farther — about 3 hours each way through the Middle Atlas — but the payoff is Morocco's tallest waterfall, a 110 m drop that often throws a rainbow. You walk a shaded, mostly paved path down to the base, can take a small wooden boat under the spray (about 20 MAD, paid on site), and will almost always see the wild Barbary macaques. Lunch on a terrace over the falls is about 100–150 MAD. Do not feed the monkeys: it harms them and can lead to fines.
Choose Essaouira for the coast and free time
Essaouira is the only one of the three where most of the day is unstructured. After a stop at a women's argan oil cooperative, you get around five hours in town: the UNESCO-listed medina, the Skala de la Kasbah sea ramparts, the fishing port and the beach. Lunch is up to you — grilled fish at the port stalls is about 80–120 MAD — and camel, horse, quad or surf activities on the beach are optional extras. The drive is about 2h45–3h each way, so it is a long day, but a relaxed one.
With children or limited mobility
- Ourika: the walk to the falls is easy to moderate with some rocky sections; kids and older travellers manage it at their own pace in closed shoes with grip
- Ouzoud: the path down is gentle but the climb back up is steeper; our tour pages describe it as suitable for kids and reasonably fit seniors (from age 5 on the private day), and it is not wheelchair accessible
- Essaouira: there is no set walk, so you decide how much to do; the harder part is about 2h45–3h in the vehicle each way
- If walking is the concern rather than driving, the private Three Valleys tour (€120 per car) is a scenic drive with easy stops and no long hikes
- On private tours, child seats can be arranged on request; give each child's age when you book
The honest downsides
- Ourika can feel crowded at weekends and the path to the falls gets slippery — wear real shoes, not flip-flops
- Ouzoud's drive is long; if you dislike long day trips, the time at the falls can feel short for the distance
- Essaouira is famously windy, so bring a light layer even when Marrakech is hot
- Lunch and small extras are paid locally on all three, so carry dirhams
- In winter Ourika can be cold near the waterfalls; in summer the climb back up at Ouzoud can be hot
Our recommendation
One free day and not much appetite for driving? Ourika. One free day and a clear wish to see a huge waterfall? Ouzoud. One free day and you would rather wander a sea-front medina on your own than follow a group all day? Essaouira. With two free days, pair Ourika with either of the others. They head in different directions from Marrakech, so never try to combine two in one day.
"Ourika is the trip I send families and first-timers on — it's forgiving if the day runs long. Ouzoud I only recommend once someone tells me the waterfall itself is the whole point of their day."— Rachid, Marrakech itinerary editor, Rachid Excursions
